NC Supports Military Children

North Carolina is home to the 4th largest military population in the US, including more than 52,000 school age children of active duty military, Guard and Reserve. North Carolina appreciates its military connection and strives to provide support systems to meet the unique needs of military families. In the realm of education, NC has the following in place to assist military families:

  • Military Liaison Counselors – NC created these positions to focus on the unique needs of military students in the educational setting. Military Liaison Counselors offer training to school system staff and provide direct support to military connected children in four North Carolina school systems where military installations are located: Craven, Cumberland, Onslow and Wayne.
  • Installation School Liaison Officers – Each military installation provides support to the K-12 students in and around their installation (catchment area) by employing at least one School Liaison Officer (some have more!).
  • NC National Guard – The NC National Guard operates a Family Programs office which can provide resources and support to eligible families.
  • Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children – As the 11th state to sign the compact (All 50 States participate now), North Carolina works to resolve education transition issues for military children in four key problem areas: eligibility, graduation, enrollment and placement.
  • CFNC Military/Military Dependent – The College Foundation of North Carolina website provides information to help you enhance your career, explore college options, and research education benefits available to you. Tools are available to assist with the following:
    • Education for current and former military personnel and dependents
    • Department of Veterans Affairs’ education benefits
    • Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, often called the Post-9/11 GI Bill
    • Military education programs available at community colleges and schools of the UNC system
    • Electronic submission of your military transcript.
